Dear Jim and All Syracuse Rotarians: Barbara and I want to once again say how very appreciative we are of the recent community service award you bestowed on us on Friday, May 15, 2009. We are deeply aware that there are so many men and women in this community – quite a number from Syracuse Rotary itself – who undoubtedly deserved this honor – that we found this a most humbling experience. A special thank-you to Brad Strait for all that he did to help honor us – the lengthy resume he prepared of our activities was probably more “glowing” than we deserved. We do know that he must have spent many hours in its preparation. Many of you, as individuals, have been so very supportive of our work with Syracuse Habitat for Humanity over the past 25 years and for that we thank you too. And, especially do we thank you again for the gift of $5700 made by Syracuse Rotary last year toward the building of the 2008 “Inter-Faith Habitat House”. Perhaps you will never know how much, especially in these economic times, that gift was appreciated. Last, but not least, thank you to the many persons who took the time to attend the awards luncheon. Your applause left us with some very warm feelings! Sincerely, Ray & Barbara Leach Philanthropy and Charity Committee Report At the Rotary meeting on Friday, February 6, 2009, Chair Gary Katz reported on the following grants: $3,000 Hope for the Bereaved to purchase grief books for children. $7,100 CAAR Literacy combined with $2700 from last years anonymous grant and matching district funds to, fully fund this project. $2,000 Westcott Community Center to purchase audio/video equipment to serve the neighborhood and the film festival. $4,450 Rosamond Gifford Zoo in combination with a $3,000 anonymous grant to fund renovations or the otter exhibit. $1,578 ARC of Onondaga County to purchase 12 trikes for Parkside Children's Center serving 150 children. $18,128 Total |
