Rotary Club of Syracuse

Board of Directors Meeting of Aug. 17, 2010

Present: Ray Leach, Charles Manro, Matt Schallmo, Tom Platt, Mary Lou Thompson, Jim Gladziszewski, Brad Strait, Pat Spadafora, Tom O’Shea

Meeting was called to order by President Matt Schallmo at 8:05 AM.

MMSA to accept minutes for July 20, 2010 Board meeting.

Mary Lou Thompson submitted treasurer’s report. MMSA to accept report.

Finance Committee chair Tom Platt reported on meeting held with Past President’s group.  No decisions reached, but several strategies discussed to further Syracuse Rotary Club future, including some fund raising ideas to help finance the Children’s Christmas Party.  One idea was to perhaps discuss the idea with other Syracuse area club’s to see if they would care to participate physically and fiscally in the Christmas Party.

President Schallmo brought up the subject of expectations for new members.  Three main points were brought out.  These are:

(1)   Attendance to be at least 60%

(2)  Should contribute to Philanthropy and Charity drive.

(3)  Join a committee of their choosing.

President Schallmo submitted a list of committees and proposed chairmen each with a specific focus list as follows:

(1)  CLUB SERVICE & OFFICE: (Brad Strait)

(2)  COMMUNITY SERVICE: (Charlie Manro)

(3)  DISTRICT & INTERNATIONAL: (Bob Pickett)

(4)  VOCATIONAL SERVICES/YOUTH SERVICES: (Jim Gladziszewski)

MMSA to approve nominations and detailed focus list.

Report on Camp Goodwill by President Schallmo indicates the need for a new roof at a cost of $3800.00.  He suggested this money be requested from the foundation.  Before this is done, Brad Strait suggested we get an up-to-date report on the total situation at the Camp.  Discussion followed pointing out we hold a second mortgage on the camp (Solvay Bank holds the first mortgage) and apparently no payments are being made on either.  We need to know what is happening and whether or not the whole operation is functional and feasible. MMSA to get a full up-to-date report on Camp Goodwill.

MMSA by Jim Gladziszewski to donate $100.00 to District Governor toward a Paul Harris fellowship.  This has been done historically.  Money will come from the Intercom Fund.

Brad Strait moved to donate $100.00 to the Syracuse University Engineer’s Golf tournament.  This will get our name on a specific hole and bring us favorable publicity to a large group of young people. MMSA.

Brad Strait also announced a Rotary Golf outing scheduled for August 27, 2010.  Save the date. Details re time and place will follow.

Pres. Schallmo mentions we are almost out of coffee cups which we give to speakers. Will bring up for discussion at next meeting.

Rotarian George (Butch) DeAngelo is in St. Joseph’s Hospital for heart surgery.  He would appreciate cards and after a week or so would be glad to get phone calls.

Pres. Schallmo adjourned meeting at 9:01 AM

Respectfully submitted,

Ray Leach, Secretary, Syracuse Rotary Club.
